Welcome to Term 3!
I’d like to begin by congratulating all of our students on their Semester 1 report card results – they were, once again, some of the strongest we’ve seen at Yeronga. This is a reflection of the hard work and commitment of our students, and the incredible dedication of our staff. We’re proud of the continued improvement and excellence across every year level.
A big welcome back to our students and staff who recently returned from the study tour to Japan. What an amazing opportunity – and I know there are memories from the trip that will stay with them for life. Planning is already underway for the next international student experience, so stay tuned!
We’ve had a very full start to the term. This week, we celebrated NAIDOC Week, and it was fantastic to see so many of our students proudly leading cultural activities and sharing their stories. We also welcomed students from local primary schools to join us for parts of the celebration.
At the same time, our Year 11 students headed off to their Leadership Camp, where they certainly embraced the challenge – despite the cold, the mud, and a few soggy socks! We're looking forward to hearing more about what they learned and how they’ll take that leadership back into the school.

This weekend is also our P&C Trivia Night. We hope everyone attending has a fantastic time – thank you to our hardworking P&C and community for pulling the event together. It’s always a fun night and a great way to support the school.
Looking ahead to next Wednesday, 6 August, parents have been made aware of planned Protected Industrial Action. We are working closely with the Department of Education around the processes involved, and we will provide further information to families as soon as possible to help you plan.
As always, thank you for your support and involvement in our school community.
Have a wonderful term.

Welcome to Term 3 – Celebrating Culture, Looking Ahead, and Building Learning Habits
Welcome back to Term 3! We hope all families had a restful break and that students are ready for another exciting term of learning and growth at Yeronga State High School.
Week 3 began with vibrant NAIDOC Week celebrations, as our First Nations students joined with local primary schools to honour the rich history, culture, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Through assemblies, workshops, and engaging lunchtime activities, students explored this year’s theme, “The Next Generation: Strength, Vision & Legacy.” The theme acknowledges the strength passed down by Elders, the vision of emerging Indigenous leaders, and the enduring legacy across generations. These experiences offered students valuable opportunities to deepen their understanding and appreciation of First Nations perspectives.
There are several upcoming events on the school calendar for Years 7 and 8 students this term, including the Year 7 Humanities excursion, Science Week activities, and Arts Showcase performances. Keep an eye on the Yeronga SHS calendar and regular Compass updates to stay informed.
As students settle into the term, it’s also a great time to review homework and study techniques. Encourage regular, short study sessions, using tools like summary notes, practice questions, and concept maps. Creating a calm and consistent study space at home can support strong learning routines.
Looking to the future, enrolments for Year 7 in 2026 are now open. If you have siblings, family friends or community members considering Yeronga SHS, we encourage early enquiries to secure a place in our supportive and culturally rich school community. School tours and enrolment interviews are available—please contact our office for more details.
Let’s make Term 3 one of connection, curiosity and growth for our junior students!

Welcome to Term 3!
I hope all students had a chance to recharge over the break and are ready for a productive term ahead.
Yeronga Celebrates
Get ready for one of the biggest events on the school calendar – Yeronga Celebrates!
Please note: Friday 15 August is a compulsory school day for all students.
The day will be packed with exciting activities, including:
- Cultural workshops
- Parade of Nations
- Cultural concert
- Colour run
- Food trucks
In addition, we invite families and the wider community to join us for the evening celebration from 3:00pm to 7:00pm.
It’s a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the diversity and spirit of our school. Mark your calendars and don’t miss it!
Uniform and Attendance Expectations
This Term, we continue to emphasise the importance of uniform compliance and regular attendance. Senior students are expected to take responsibility for their learning by wearing the correct school uniform and attending every day, unless they are sick or facing exceptional circumstances. If support is needed, we encourage students and families to communicate with the school early. Consistent absences impact learning and are often reflected in a student’s academic achievement, effort, and behaviour.
Semester 1 Report Cards
Semester 1 reports have been emailed to parents/carers. If you have not received your child’s report card, please contact the school office to update your contact details and request a copy. We encourage families to take time to review the report together. Reflect on Semester 1 achievements and discuss areas for improvement or strategies to maintain strong performance. Students are encouraged to speak with their teachers or Heads of Department to set meaningful goals for the term.
Year 12 — Final Stretch
Term 3 is critical for Year 12 students, with only around 11 weeks left before external exams begin in Term 4, Week 4. Time management and focus are key. Students should be prioritising assessment deadlines and exam preparation, especially if they are aiming to graduate with their Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE). Students unsure about post-school options are encouraged to book an appointment with the Guidance Officer to explore career pathways.
Year 12 Trial Exams
Trial exams for General subjects will be held in Weeks 8 and 9. The schedule has been emailed to all Year 12 students and parents/carers. These exams are designed to replicate the structure and expectations of the final external exams. Attendance at all scheduled exam sessions is mandatory.
QTAC Applications
QTAC applications open on August 5. All Year 12 students have been assigned a QTAC support person who will assist with the application process. Even if students are not planning to pursue tertiary studies, they are still required to meet with their support person to discuss post-school options such as gap years, full-time work, apprenticeships, or traineeships. Students can collect the 2026 QTAC Guide from the Senior School.
Year 11 Leadership Camp and Nominations
As Year 12 students prepare to graduate, our Year 11 cohort is stepping into leadership roles. Sixty-one students will attend the upcoming Leadership Camp at Emu Gully, where they will develop their leadership skills and present their visions for 2026 school captaincy. We look forward to seeing these young leaders grow.
Formal and Semi-Formal Requirements
As we approach the Formal and Semi-Formal events, a reminder that attendance is by invitation from the Principal. To be eligible, students must:
- Maintain at least 95% attendance
- Be on track to receive their QCE
- Achieve at least a 'Satisfactory' in both Effort and Behaviour across all subjects
- Consistently wear the correct school uniform in accordance with the Dress Code Policy

Engagement & Wellbeing: Student Voice
Belonging Survey Results: We’ve been analysing student feedback on what helps them feel included. Top themes included friends, favourite teachers, and activities like breakfast club. At the Student Summit, students produced the following ideas to enhance belonging and connection for all staff and students:
- ‘Consultation’ – teachers check in on wellbeing of students during assessment time
- ‘Spend time together’ – in a situation where someone has been bullied, the wellbeing team facilitates relationship building and time with the students
- More student-led clubs and events
- ‘Quiet space’ – students have 3 passes a term to go to a quiet space instead of class
- ‘Motivational speakers’ – study inspiration e.g. how to manage school work load
Student Leadership and Voice:
Horizon Women’s Hub: Women's Hub met with Minaz last week and talked about how to be assertive. We will be meeting again soon to shape the upcoming breakfast event with a special guest speaker. Planning is underway to spotlight young women’s leadership and networks.

Other news and updates:
SRC Check-In Meeting: Reminder that our Student Representative Council meets on even weeks Tuesday first break in the ProLounge at the top of D block. Everyone welcome!
Attendance Drive: Let’s work together to keep our attendance strong. Being here helps others feel connected — every day counts.
Jobs & Careers: Year 10s who have recently secured jobs are reminded to balance work and study. Well done to those who’ve stepped up!

NAPLAN Success Across Year Levels
Yeronga students have shown commendable progress in their 2025 NAPLAN results. Year 7 students excelled in Spelling and Reading, with nearly 70% achieving Strong or Exceeding levels, and Numeracy results highlighted a solid foundation with over 60% reaching Strong proficiency. Year 9 students continued this trend, particularly in Spelling and Reading, where more than half of the cohort performed at Strong or above. These results reflect the dedication of our students and staff, and we celebrate the strong literacy outcomes and consistent growth across cohorts.
Celebrating NAIDOC Week at Yeronga
Yeronga State High proudly celebrated NAIDOC Week with a vibrant morning of cultural connection and creativity. We welcomed First Nations students from Moorooka State School, Junction Park State School, and Yeronga State School to join our celebration. Together, students painted boomerangs, designed artwork inspired by Dreamtime stories, and played traditional games that honoured Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures. The event was a joyful expression of community, storytelling, and shared learning, reflecting our commitment to reconciliation and respect.
On Monday, Peter and Xavier in Year 7 returned to Moorooka to address their assemblies about NAIDOC Week and represented our school. We were extremely proud.
Throughout this week, YSHS will be conducting assorted NAIDOC activities.

National School Tree Day – Celebrating Growth, Support & Future Champions! "Olympic Forest"
This National School Tree Day, we planted more than just trees. We planted hopes, dreams, and the promise of a bright future. Our campus came alive with energy as our Year 7 students and Athlete Academy participants rolled up their sleeves to help grow the Olympic Forest, a living symbol of resilience, strength, and community.
We were also proud to bring one of our school’s core values -sustainability - to life. By planting trees and creating lasting green spaces, our students are actively contributing to a healthier planet and learning what it means to care for the environment they’ll inherit.
We were thrilled to be joined by our Gold Sponsor, Motorama Toyota Moorooka, whose generous support makes days like this possible. Their team was on-site to celebrate alongside our students, sharing in the joy and significance of the day. A huge thank you to Motorama for your continued commitment to our school community - you’re helping our students grow and thrive every day.
Don’t miss the fantastic photos featuring the Motorama team our students in action!

Catch the reel highlights on our social pages!
We asked our Athlete Academy students a powerful question:
“If this tree represented your journey as an athlete or student, what would you hope it grows into?” Their responses were thoughtful, inspiring, and a true reflection of the dedication and ambition we see in them every day.
Follow us on Facebook and Instagram to watch the reel and see these incredible answers for yourself - it's a reminder of the bright futures taking root right here on campus.
Together, we’re nurturing growth, celebrating support, and championing the next generation of leaders and athletes.

STATIONERY STASH J: Donations needed now please
What is the Stationery Stash?: It is a trolley containing donated new or lightly used, good quality stationery supplies - for all students and staff to use as needed.
Donations needed year round please
(only donate new or good quality slightly used items please)
Donation boxes are near Student Hub and at Admin reception
Items needed/ available:
Exercise books
Grid books
Visual Art diaries
Pencils (lead and coloured)
Pens (ballpoint in red, blue and black)
Highlighter pens
Erasers, sharpeners, coloured textas
Whiteboard markers
Calculators
Rulers
Pencil cases
Where: Outside Ms Haswell-Smith’s office near the Student Hub
When: Monday to Friday during school hours
Why: Some families struggle with the cost of book lists each year, while other families end up with an excess of stationery that may end up being recycled or dumped when it still has a lot of life left. It’s a win-win for these items to be donated and used as support for YSHS students & staff plus the environmental benefits of less going to landfill.
- Students may occasionally forget to bring an exercise book, or their pen runs out, and they can then quickly grab one from the Stationery Stash to use that day and have less disruption to learning
- New students may arrive with little to no stationery and can quickly get the essentials to avoid barriers to settling in and learning
Who: run by parent volunteers and SRC students with Ms Haswell-Smith
Please contact Jae (Olly P’s mum) if you have any questions jspinaze47@gmail.com
Soooooo – please check at home for stationery that needs a new home and let’s get the YSHS Stationery Stash up and running for everyone!

Cert III Screen and Media - QUT X Essential Screen Skills Experience 2025
Yeronga is a Screen and Media Gateway to Industry School. Essential Screen Skills delivers the Screen and Media Gateway to Industry School Program proudly supported and funded by the Queensland Government. The Screen and Media Gateway to Industry Schools project encourages partnerships between industry, government, schools and their communities to build Queensland's future Screen and media workforce. Because of our involvement with the Gateway program, some very fortunate Year 11 and 12s got to attend QUT for a select experience focused on Film, Technology and Design.
As part of this experience students worked collaboratively to film a scene in the state-of-the-art Virtual Production Studio, getting hands on with cameras, effects and props, they filmed a Jurassic Park like scene with live playback as actors, directors and camera people.
They then learnt about Production Design, creating worlds for screen in a hands-on environment creating and experimenting with real environments while learning key design concepts. This was a valuable experience, and I can’t wait to go back with more students next year.

Year 10 Media Arts - Videos for Change Project
The Year 10s have just finished up their semester in Media Arts and have created some emotive and thought-provoking films for change. Our final unit in Media Arts is Video for Change where students work individually or in a group to create a 1 min film on a social issue of their choice, that they feel passionately about. Zia Yoshida’s film was voted best in the class by the students. An emotive film shinning a light on men’s mental health.

Our recent Japan Study Tour was an incredible adventure filled with culture, new experiences, and unforgettable memories. Our 10 amazing students were absolute stars throughout the trip—curious, respectful, and full of energy every step of the way.
From the lively start at Brisbane Airport, with some funny lessons on what not to pack (and some unexpected challenges involving our fantastic teachers Ms Shaw and Mrs Growns-Lieu!), to landing in Tokyo where Mr Huang was having the time of his life and Ms Truong needed some “bubble wrap protection” after a few amusing incidents—the journey was action-packed from the start!
Our students embraced every moment—from visiting Chiba Keiai High School, practicing kendo, and participating in a tea ceremony, to exploring the Imperial Palace, the stunning TeamLab Planets digital art museum, and the majestic Mt. Fuji area. The magical Harry Potter event was a particular highlight, adding a touch of fantasy to the cultural experience.
They also experienced the serenity of Sensoji Temple and Meiji Jingu Shrine, balanced by the bright lights and excitement of Ginza. Throughout it all, our students showed great respect and enthusiasm, making the most of every opportunity.
A huge thank you to our wonderful students and dedicated teachers who made this trip safe, fun, and meaningful. We’re so proud of the way our students represented our school with curiosity and kindness.
As we wrap up this amazing journey, we’re already excited to start planning our next adventure—2026 or 2027, here we come! Korea, get ready! Or maybe China? Do you have a preference?
For now, Arigatou, Japan — until next time!

Year 12 Biology Excursion - University of Queensland
On Tuesday, 22 July 2025, Year 12 Biology students attended a Genetics workshop at The University of Queensland. This experience allowed students to further improve on their understanding of the Unit 4 subject matter and practice laboratory skills relevant to the study of Genetics.
Students had the opportunity to acquire individual assistance from current undergraduate students, as well as explore other in-use labs throughout the School of Biological Sciences at the university. The overall program was delivered by Dr Gurion Ang, exploring concepts such as, recombinant DNA via bacterial transformation, gene regulation and DNA extraction, amplification (PCR) and analysis through gel electrophoresis.
The day was a great success with hands on learning that sparked their curiosity and motivated the Year 12’s to further reflect on a future that will allow them to contribute to the study of Biology, specifically genetics and microbiology, at a tertiary level.

My Homestay Experience: Maka Sasao (Japan)
This is a recent positive experience from one of our homestay students, Maka Sasao.
About Me
I’ve stayed here since 23 January 2025, and I’ve been living with my host family for seven months. The purpose of coming here is not only to learn English, but also to understand diversity, which I cannot fully experience in Japan. Many friends and kind host families make me happy.
What I Enjoy About My Homestay Life
I live with my host father, host mother, host sister and another Chinese international student. My host parents are always thinking us, and they act for our future. My mother said to me, “I hope my host students living away from their family learn not only English but also become independent.”
They are busy every day, but they make time to chat with me and give me many opportunities. I like chatting, and I really enjoy it when my family, who are usually busy and rarely have time to gather, come together in the living room to talk.
A Memorable Day That Brings Me Joy
One of the unforgettable moments is my birthday party. They provided the place for the party and cooked a luxurious meal, also they helped me decorate the room! I haven’t held the birthday party like this before, so it made me happy, and it was a moment that deepened my appreciation for them.

Buttercup and Venus: Cowkeepers Extraordinaire
Amoosing, cowmedy-filled and udderly delightful – a heartfelt tale of identity and purpose through the eyes of ageing dairy cows. This project is proudly supported by the Creative Sparks Program.
An original short play highlighting the challenges faced by older women will premiere as part of the 2025 Brisbane Anywhere Festival at the beginning of August.
Writer, director and producer of the play, Joanne Tindale said her play, Buttercup and Venus: Cowkeepers Extraordinaire taps absurdist and surreal theatre traditions.
“In this imagined universe, two ageing dairy cows, Venus and Buttercup aren’t just housekeepers — they’re the backbone of a family with two children, seventeen-year-old Charlie, eleven-year-old Maxime and workaholic parents,” said Ms Tindale.
“The play tells the story of a society in which cows are bonded with a child from birth to the age of 18. As Charlie is about to turn 18, Venus must look for another job with accommodation or risk homelessness.”
With the cows as metaphors, the play explores themes of identity, loss of usefulness and the meaning of family.
Ms Tindale is a third year PhD candidate at Griffith Film School, Griffith University, Brisbane.
The play is informed by and builds on her research into the representation of older women in screenwriting. It is also Inspired by Joanne’s childhood chore of milking her family’s Jersey cow (named Venus), her work as an Au Pair in Paris and her own experience as a mother.
Ms Tindale’s previous work includes co-producing the 2021 Women in Film and Television’s (WIFT) Online Film Festival (funded by Screen Queensland) and directing the short documentary Mei Mei, Speak More Chinese (2023). She also draws on her previous career in international development, the community services sector and as a registered nurse.
Production Designer Georgina Greenhill and Graphic Designer Gillian Worrall are also key members of the production team.
The play will premiere at The Paint Factory in Yeronga with performances at 6:00pm on Friday 1 August, and 4:00pm on Saturday 2 and Sunday 3 August. An Auslan interpreter will be at all three performances.
Tickets are $20 and can be booked at https://anywhere.is/event/cowkeepers/
