Year 12 Biology Excursion - University of Queensland
On Tuesday, 22 July 2025, Year 12 Biology students attended a Genetics workshop at The University of Queensland. This experience allowed students to further improve on their understanding of the Unit 4 subject matter and practice laboratory skills relevant to the study of Genetics.
Students had the opportunity to acquire individual assistance from current undergraduate students, as well as explore other in-use labs throughout the School of Biological Sciences at the university. The overall program was delivered by Dr Gurion Ang, exploring concepts such as, recombinant DNA via bacterial transformation, gene regulation and DNA extraction, amplification (PCR) and analysis through gel electrophoresis.
The day was a great success with hands on learning that sparked their curiosity and motivated the Year 12’s to further reflect on a future that will allow them to contribute to the study of Biology, specifically genetics and microbiology, at a tertiary level.
