- Community News
It’s been a vibrant and rewarding few weeks at Yeronga State High School, with many exciting achievements and celebrations across our school community. I am so proud of our community and all that we are achieving together.
We were pleased to shine a spotlight on the work happening across our Arts programs during the recent Arts Academy Showcase on 1 August. It was a thoughtful and engaging evening that highlighted the creativity and dedication of our students across a range of artistic disciplines. From visual art to dance, drama and music, students shared their skills and passion in ways that reflected both their individual growth and the collaborative nature of the arts. The evening was a valuable reminder of how the arts contribute to building confidence, connection, and community within our school. We extend our thanks to the students and staff whose hard work made the event such a success.

We were also thrilled to see Yeronga SHS represented for the first time at the Ipswich Performers Dance Competition. Congratulations to our Year 9 team on their efforts, and a special thanks to Ms Alex Fliakos for her dedication and support. A special mention goes to Rhea McDonald (Year 9), who placed third in the Year 12 student choreography category—an outstanding result.

Our biennial Yeronga Celebrates event was another highlight, showcasing the wonderful diversity of our school community. It was heartening to see students embrace their cultures and nationalities with pride and courage, contributing to a shared culture of celebration within our school. A huge thank you to staff and students for a wonderful event, and to our community partners and parents for joining us to share in this special celebration.

We’re proud to share that Yeronga SHS has received the Educator Award for Best Co-Curricular Program, a prestigious recognition as the best in Australia. This award includes schools from both the State and Non-State sectors. Additionally, we were honoured to be named a finalist in the Wellbeing category. These accolades highlight the quality and breadth of programs and support we offer beyond the classroom, and the inclusive, supportive environment we continue to build.
Our Year 11 Leadership Camp provided another great learning experience for our students—muddy, cold, wet, and full of fun. Despite the challenging conditions, students rose to the occasion, showing leadership, teamwork, and resilience.
There have been many student successes this term. I want to acknowledge our students of Spanish, Chinese, and Japanese who represented the school in the LTQ Brisbane Speech Contest. They presented with great poise, confidence, and passion—congratulations to all involved.
In sport, we’ve seen strong results at District Athletics, with our highest number of students progressing through to the Met West Carnival. We’re excited to watch their continued success.
Looking ahead, we’re proud of the continued growth of our music program. Over the past four years, we’ve expanded from a small concert band to a dynamic program now featuring a 40-member symphonic band, jazz band, string ensemble, advanced string quartet, and multiple choirs. We look forward to showcasing our talented students at the Instrumental Music Night on 28 October.
Thank you to all parents and carers who attended our recent Parent-Teacher Interviews—your involvement plays an important role in supporting student progress and wellbeing.
We’re also looking forward to welcoming new families at our upcoming Y-Tour and Parent Information Session on 27 August. This is a great opportunity for prospective students and parents to learn more about the Yeronga SHS experience.

Thank you once again for your ongoing support. We’re looking forward to a strong and positive finish to the term.

From the Deputy Principal – Middle School

It was wonderful to see so many families attend the Parent-Teacher Interviews on Wednesday. These sessions provide a valuable opportunity for open dialogue and feedback on student progress, and we appreciate your ongoing support.
Thank you to all parents and carers who participated in the School Opinion Survey. The survey closes this evening, and we expect to receive the results early in Term 4. Your feedback is vital, and we encourage families to continue sharing thoughts or concerns with our Heads of Department, Deputy Principals, or the school administration. We are committed to working together with our community to continually improve the quality of education and support we provide.
A special thank you to our Year 10 families who took part in the SET planning sessions in Week 4. These meetings are an important step in guiding students toward their senior pathways. Next week, we’ll begin reviewing subject selection clashes as we start building the 2026 timetable. As Term 3 results become available, we’ll also review the academic progress of students who committed to engagement and achievement contracts as part of their eligibility to study General subjects.
Looking ahead, Year 9 subject selections will take place in Week 10. In Year 10 at Yeronga SHS, all students will study English and Mathematics throughout the year. During this time, they will be supported into the most appropriate pathway—General English, EAL English, or Essential English; and for Maths—Mathematical Methods/Specialist, General Maths, or Essential Maths—based on their academic performance.
Students will also study four elective subjects in Semester 1 and another four in Semester 2. As per the Australian Curriculum guidelines, students are required to study at least one Science, one Humanities, and one Health and Physical Education subject across the year.
In 2026, Year 10 students will also have the opportunity to study a Language for either one semester or the full year. This option will also apply to selected Arts subjects. As students move closer to their senior years, our curriculum is designed to support those who wish to explore senior subjects early, as well as those who want to deepen their understanding in subjects they already enjoy and excel in.
We look forward to supporting your children through these important next steps in their education journey.

Yeronga Celebrates Multiculturalism 2025
The air was alive with excitement as Yeronga came together for Yeronga Celebrates Multiculturalism 2025. This year’s event coincided with Multicultural Queensland Month, a statewide celebration of cultural diversity. For our school community, it was the perfect opportunity to acknowledge the richness of our shared stories, traditions, and languages that make Yeronga unique.
At Yeronga, we are proud to reflect Australia’s multicultural identity — a place where people from many nations and backgrounds unite in respect, friendship, and harmony. One of the most powerful moments of the day was the Parade of Nations, as students proudly crossed the stage in their cultural clothing, greeting the audience in the languages of their heritage. Behind every flag waved and every tradition honoured lies a personal story of family, identity, and belonging. This parade is not about politics — it is about people.
The success of the day was only possible thanks to the efforts of our enthusiastic students and dedicated staff. From workshops and cultural performances to food stalls, the junior futsal competition, and the colour run, the entire festival reflected the spirit of collaboration, pride, and celebration.
Ultimately, Yeronga Celebrates is more than a festival. It is a reminder that unity grows strongest when we come together with open hearts and open minds. Diversity is not only something to celebrate — it enriches us all.

Year 12 Update
10 Weeks Remaining
Our Year 12 students are entering their final stage of high school, with approximately 10 weeks left. Formal lessons and assessments will conclude by the end of Week 3, Term 4, leaving just eight weeks before many students sit their External Exams. It is essential that students attend every day to maximise learning and give themselves the best chance of success in their final assessments.
Mock Exams
The Year 12 Mock Exams will take place in Weeks 8 and 9 of this term. These exams are an important preparation for the External Exams, scheduled for Term 4, Week 4. Students and parents/carers have already received soft copies of the timetable via email.
External Assessment
Assessment provides students with the opportunity to demonstrate what they know and can do. Requirements vary depending on the subjects studied.
For more information, please see details on QCAA here:
- General and Applied subjects
- Preparing for external assessment
- Sample papers
- Assessment timetables
- Access arrangements and reasonable adjustments (previously known as Special Provision)
- Individual subject syllabuses
The External Exam timetable has been released on the QCAA website. A modified Yeronga SHS version will be emailed to all students and parents/carers shortly. Exams will run from Monday 27 October to Tuesday 18 November, with External SEE oral exams occurring the week prior.
Year 11 Update
2026 Leadership Speeches
Our Year 11 students are currently preparing their leadership speeches as they put themselves forward for 2025 leadership positions. In the coming weeks, they will stand before their peers to share their vision for the school, their ideas for strengthening our culture, and their aspirations for leading the student body in their final year.
Earlier this year, I had the privilege of joining our Year 11 students on camp, where I saw first-hand the qualities that make this cohort such a strong group of emerging leaders. Together, they faced challenges that required teamwork, resilience, and problem-solving. Time and again, they demonstrated tenacity, compassion, and determination — qualities that will serve them well as senior leaders of our school.
This process is more than just a speech — it is an opportunity for students to step into the responsibility of leadership, to think deeply about what it means to represent their peers, and to articulate how they will contribute to the culture and direction of our school in 2026.
We look forward to hearing their inspiring ideas and supporting them as they continue their journey towards becoming the role models of our school community.

Semi-Formal and 2026 Jerseys/Jackets
At the end of 2024, all students received a copy of the Senior Statement of Expectations, which outlines the standards required to participate in key Year 11 and 12 privileges such as ordering a senior jersey/jacket and attending the semi-formal. These expectations have been reiterated throughout the year in assemblies.
Students who have not met the expectations will not receive an invitation or order letter. However, in the interest of fairness, there is a right of reply process. Students who believe they have met the requirements may present their case to the Principal and Deputy Principal.
Senior Statement of Expectations
As senior students at Yeronga SHS, Year 11s are expected to:
- developing quality relationships that are based on mutual respect and complying with Student Code of Conduct;
- maintaining high standards in dress and appearance, conduct and behaviour, work ethic and attendance;
- committing to the school’s culture of harmony and acting at all times with respect and show tolerance towards other students and staff;
- respect the property of the school and others while maintaining a clean and safe environment;
- Attend at a rate of 95% or higher and arrive on time, unless there are extenuating circumstances which have been documented by satisfactory parent explanation or medical certificate;
- Comply with the YSHS Student Dress Code policy meeting health and safety requirements, and other legislative standards while demonstrating pride in self, others and the school;
- Complete homework tasks, assignments and assessment on time and follow the school’s assessment policy as per the school’s website;
- Have all of the required equipment for each subject and charged laptop;
- Effectively engage in learning environments and not be subject to school disciplinary actions such as after - school detentions and suspensions;
- Pay all subsequent school resource fees;
- at all times be a worthy ambassador for Yeronga State High School.
Students who are unable to meet these expectations are required to submit a request for review to the Principal and Deputy Principal.

News from the HOD of Middle School
It has been a busy and exciting few weeks for our Year 9 and 10 students, filled with opportunities to contribute, connect, and celebrate. It was great to see many year 9s and 10s actively involved in the planning and running of Yeronga Celebrates; we have some leaders in the making!
Attendance and Engagement
Strong attendance remains a key focus this term. Each week we track attendance by year level and roll class, and it has been pleasing to see improvements as students recognise the importance of being present — not just for their learning, but also for their friendships, routines, and sense of belonging. I encourage families to continue supporting students to arrive on time and ready for the day.
Student Voice in Action
Our Student Summits continue to give students a genuine platform to shape school life. Recently, students engaged in a fast-paced session on the Code of Conduct, offering recommendations about how policies are lived in classrooms and playgrounds. In addition, students have been reflecting on our Universals — Effort, Empathy, and Respect — providing ideas for how these values can be explained, modelled, and embedded across the school. Their insights are thoughtful, creative, and already helping to shape our next steps.
Horizons Women’s Hub – National Recognition
We are also celebrating a major achievement: Horizons Women’s Hub has won the Australian Education Award for Best Co-curricular Program. This recognition highlights the incredible work of our students and staff in creating a space for young women to learn, lead, and connect with inspiring role models. The award reinforces what we already know: when students are given authentic opportunities and a strong voice, they thrive.
Looking Forward
As we move through the rest of the term, our focus remains on lifting attendance, strengthening engagement, and ensuring every student knows their voice matters. Year 9 and 10 students are not just participants at Yeronga — they are leaders, change-makers, and active contributors to our community.
Coming up for Year 9: Junior Education and Training Plan (JET plan) and subject choices for year 10.
Coming up for year 10: Respectful relationships in Learner Agency Classes and we are looking at completeing a First Aid course in term 4.

Your support drives our school forward!
Term three has been a rollercoaster for the Arts, with incursions and excursions, showcases and celebrations. Together with the talented students at Yeronga, we have been championing the Arts in its many forms. What follows is but a taste of what we have been involved in, and it is truly a testament to the hard work that all Arts staff and Arts students dedicate to the craft.
The Scene Project
The Drama club, lead by Amanda Perk, participated in Queensland Theatre’s annual Scene project this term. The Scene Project is where schools across Queensland get access to a brand new play script and create their own theatre performance. Yeronga’s Drama Club performed alongside high school students from Loretto College, Aviation Academy, Fortitude Valley High School and Mango Hill SHS and did an amazing job! They received an abundance of praise from the facilitators and other school students. They made some amazing connections with other budding thespians and got some excellent industry experience and advice from the professional actors at Queensland Theatre. The students involved were Year 11s Asha Abdelrahman Selat, Amity Auguston, Connie Lambros and Evie Lyons, Year 9s Elise Foley, Reya Geering, Indigo Quills and Miwa Jongen Tsey, Year 8 Olive Frusin and Year 7s: Aria Lofting, Anne Nettleton, Taylor Shackel, Michaela Watson and Violet McFarlane.
The Apology
Year 9 Drama had Shock Therapy Productions visit and perform their production of 'The Apology'. Inspired by a true story of a high school student who “took revenge” on a classmate who was bullying him after his father advised him to “fight back”, 'The Apology' is a searingly honest look at the repercussions of taking revenge and the long-term effects that bullying can have.
This production has helped inform the student’s own practice in performance and deepened their understanding of how to manipulate the conventions of drama in order to communicate meaning.
Creative Generation
Each year, Yeronga is proud to participate in Creative Generation—State Schools Onstage (CGEN). Since its inception in 2005, the large-scale event has grown from a cast of 550 students to now more than 2,000 and is nationally renowned for its outstanding and vibrant display of state school talent. This year, 29 students in 9 different choirs, dance ensembles, instrumental ensembles and backstage crew represented Yeronga at the event.
These amazing students performed at the Brisbane conventions centre in front of 4 sold out audiences of over 1000 people each performance. They gave up their weekends and weeknights for rehearsals since the beginning of the year, and did themselves, and their teachers, Sam Robinson and Alex Fliakos, very proud indeed! These are our amazing CGen students:

Arts Academy Showcase
In Week 3, the Arts Academy had its Semester 1 Showcase for family and friends. Taking over the library, Visual Art and Media students exhibited their work, turning the space into a truly magnificent gallery. The work was varied and wonderful. All of the work was self directed, produced under the watchful eye of Skye Thompson and Jo Flamia. The theme, 'ADRIFT', was explored through a variety of mediums, including animation, sculpture and multi-modal forms.
The audience was then treated to a showcase from the Performing Arts in the auditorium, where Amanda Perk’s Drama students, Sam Robinson’s Music students and Alex Fliakos’ Dance students strutted their stuff. Again, this work is entirely student devised, with guidance being offered by their teacher mentors. What the students achieved is delightful and inspiring.
Already, the Arts Academy students are beginning work on their Term 4 Showcase, exploring the theme of ‘OUT OF THIS WORLD’. Students are participating in tailored Masterclasses from professional artists in all Art forms so they can refine their work and grow as young artists themselves.

Farewell Mr John Aloizos
This past Yeronga Celebrates, where our students excelled in their celebration of culture and heritage, was the last to be stage managed by the amazing John Aloizos. John has retired from teaching, but ensured that our biggest and best celebration for the year went off without a hitch. John leaves behind some very big shoes to fill…both as our sound and lighting guru, but also as an amazing teacher of the Arts. He has helped to steer the ship of the Arts department for many years, and I truly wish that I had had the privilege to work with him more than I have. I have valued his sage advice. His calm and welcoming demeanour. He truly will be missed. Enjoy your retirement, John….you are welcome back anytime!

Met West Track and Field trials
The following students will be representing the Eastern Taipans team at Met West trials in early September. We wish them well in their individual events:
Met Wet Team
Congratulations to Lily McLaughlin who recently made the 13-14yrs Met West Girls Cricket team. Lily will represent Met West at National trials soon.
Speed and Agility Training
Students have been participating in a new weekly Speed and Agility training program this term, delivered by Athletix. All Yeronga students were invited to sign up, and there will be another opportunity to register next term.
So far in the program, students have focused on developing their speed and agility, combining practical drills with learning the theory behind how to improve these components. Through movement activities and games, they have applied this knowledge to see how speed and agility enhance performance, build confidence, and provide a competitive edge.
Women in Sport Summit
Next week, selected girls from the senior Athletes Academy classes will be attending the Women in Sport Summit 2025 Student Day. This is an event designed to inspire and empower high school students to explore diverse and innovative career pathways in the sports industry.
Students will be able to hear from industry leaders speaking about performance sports science, advocacy, technology, marketing and events. They will also discover both traditional and emerging pathways in women’s sport, encouraging students to dream big, think broadly, and be inspired in their future careers. Students will have the chance to meet mentors, industry professionals, and role models advocating for gender equality in sport and supporting their aspirations.

Thank you and Happy Retirement, Mr John Aloizos
In 2010, Yeronga State High School struck gold when Mr John Aloizos joined our staff. From day one, it was clear John would be much more than an outstanding teacher, he became an integral part of our school community. Highly respected by colleagues, admired by students, and valued by families, no doubt John’s impact will be felt for many years to come.
There are far too many accolades to mention here, as John’s contributions extended far beyond the bounds of the classroom. He gave fully and generously to every aspect of school life, from capturing memories through his camera lens at athletics and swimming carnivals, to running the sound systems (and patiently indulging the endless song requests from staff). John brought warmth, positivity, energy, professionalism, and a measure of playfulness that made these events enjoyable.
He was also the official photographer for our Year 12 Formals, ensuring those milestone moments were captured in style for generations of Yeronga students. His artistic creativity and technical expertise brought a professional shine to all occasions.
John has always been a passionate advocate for the Arts, particularly Drama, designing and building sets and props for our high-quality school musicals and drama performances, choreographing and directing many plays, and creating lighting plans and soundscapes that elevated every production. He worked closely with local primary schools to promote both the Arts and the school, inspiring the next generation of YSHS students while strengthening our community connections. His dedication was formally recognised when he was named a finalist in the Queensland College of Teachers Teach X Awards.
Colleagues and students will fondly remember John as the creative, passionate problem-solver who was always willing to step up and make things happen. Whether it was in front of the classroom, behind the curtain, behind the camera, or up a ladder or scaffold, his steady and warm presence ensured every lesson, celebration, performance, and production was special and unforgettable. As John now steps into retirement, we know he will embrace well-deserved time with his family, will continue to enjoy travel, will relish in grandparent duties, and no doubt appreciate the simple joy of no longer responding to a bell.
So, if you see Mr Aloizos out and about, don’t be shy about saying hi, he truly found joy in the difference he made in the lives of his students and our wonderful school community. Thank you, John, for 15 years of service at Yeronga, creativity, care, and most of all, friendship. Yeronga will not be the same without you. The semester, two Year 7 Visual Art cohort has embraced the opportunity of Yeronga Celebrates to let their creativity shine.
Collaborating with Miss Conny and the Heal programme, students set about building pots to sell at a small plant stall.
The ‘Story Pot’ unit fits perfectly this term because so many students have such amazing stories to tell at such a young age!
When Jonti’s Nan stopped into our stall, she shared the story of her cultural tattoo from PNG. This was the same pattern her Grandson proudly used on his pot!
Aman made his pot in memory of his father who loved plants. He was delighted when it sold to another stall holder from MDA (Multicultural Australia).
Jerry’s pot told the story of the challenges being an international student and it is now displayed proudly on Miss Growns-Lieu’s desk.
Shout outs to Dyson who kept his frail plant alive with sheer love and will power. Jakata and Luca who manned the stall with dedication and professionalism. Also Wafda, Adila, Helen and Elsa who made gorgeous decorations from pom-poms and pool noodles!!

Temporary Students and Study Tours Highlights
Farewell to Our TRA Students from China
This week we waved goodbye to our amazing TRA students from China after an unforgettable five weeks of learning, laughter, and making memories.
From Week 1 through Week 3, we were joined by Lani, Matthew, Jeremy, Nathan, and Mao — each one diving into new subjects and making friends along the way. Here’s what they loved most:
- Matthew & Mao found joy in Maths, happily crunching numbers and solving tricky problems.
- Nathan was all about Digital Tech, exploring the world of coding and creativity.
- Jeremy loved Ethics and Choices — deep conversations and maybe the company of a certain someone special.
- Lani fell in love with HPE, she especially loved the way our HPE teachers delivered interesting lively lessons.
Weeks 2 to 4 brought us Shirley, Hanson, Dishy, Catherine, Wendy, Marian, and Bruce, who jumped straight into Aussie school life. Weeks 2 to 5 welcomed Queensley and friends, adding even more energy to our classrooms.
When asked about their highlights:
- Shirley, Wendy, Bruce, and Hanson loved making new friends.
- Marian, Dishy, and Catherine were amazed at how relaxed Aussie school life is compared to China.
- Queensley? She discovered true love… at the tuckshop.
Speaking of which — a massive shout-out to our incredible tuckshop ladies. The pizza was a weekly sensation and will go down in TRA history as legendary.
To all the staff who welcomed, taught, and encouraged our visiting students — thank you. You’ve given them memories they’ll carry long after their flight home.
Safe travels, TRA students — you’ll always have friends waiting for you here in Australia!
Shanghai Shenzhou Study Tour: A Memorable Week
From Monday, 28 July to Friday, 1 August 2025, we had the pleasure of hosting the Shanghai Shenzhou Study Tour. Over these days, students enjoyed a rich program including:
- Welcoming presentations
- School tours
- Classroom experiences alongside their Yeronga buddies
- Icebreaker games and engaging English lessons and new game of pin the tail on the Kangaroo (created by Ms Zagami)
- A fun-filled cooking class where they decorated pavlovas and created classic Australian childhood treats like chocolate crackles and honey joys
Special thanks go to the wonderful teachers who supported our visitors and to our Yeronga student buddies, many of whom were first-time buddies — your kindness and friendship made a lasting impression!

To celebrate this successful exchange, we’ve put together a video and photo collection capturing the highlights. Keep an eye out for these special memories soon!
Thank You
These amazing experiences wouldn’t have been possible without the teamwork and support from our entire community. Thank you all for making these study tours so meaningful and memorable.

Professional Development Opportunity: 1-Week Spanish Course for Teachers at UNED Segovia – July 2025
This July, Yeronga State High School was represented internationally when Ms Anna Gibbons, one of our Humanities teachers and a member of the Spanish Immersion Program, attended a one-week intensive professional development course in Segovia, Spain.
The course, hosted by UNED - Spain’s largest public university - brought together teachers of Spanish and other subjects taught in Spanish from around the world. Led by renowned experts in Spanish language education and grammar pedagogy, the program focused on enhancing grammar teaching skills, exploring innovative didactic approaches, and integrating digital and lexicographic tools into classroom practice.
Throughout the week, Ms Gibbons had the opportunity to collaborate with colleagues from across the globe, exchanging ideas and learning new strategies to enrich teaching and learning. This immersive experience not only deepened Ms Gibbon’s grammatical and technological knowledge but also provided access to the latest methodologies in Spanish language education.
The insights and skills gained from this professional development opportunity will directly benefit students at Yeronga State High School. Our Spanish Immersion students can look forward to even more engaging, dynamic, and globally connected learning experiences in the classroom.
We congratulate Ms Gibbons on this achievement and look forward to seeing the positive impact it will have on student learning at YSHS.

Year 11 English as an Additional Language - Unit 2: Perspectives in texts
Representations of Australian Identities
This term, our Year 11 EAL students have been immersed in Indigenous perspectives through the Australian play Murras by Eva Johnson. As part of this journey, we’ve been exploring how cultural assumptions, attitudes, values, and beliefs are communicated in the text — and putting explicit reading strategies into action! To help students connect with the characters and themes in a meaningful way, we used a text colour-coding strategy to highlight the key issues which characters communicate to the audience. These activities culminated in group work using yarning circles, where students collaboratively created character profiles from the play. The activity encouraged creativity, teamwork, and thoughtful discussion — and the results were truly impressive!

We’re also lucky to be currently working with Ms. Ngoc Phan, a talented artist who has held a long term connection with Yeronga through the Y-Connect program. She’s been assisting students through workshops in class to build their confidence, as they prepare to perform their own imaginative monologues based on characters from the play Murras. We are looking forward to viewing what the students create!
There’s more to come — stay tuned!

Last Week our Year 9 Drama students stepped back in time as they performed with traditional Commedia dell’Arte masks — and let’s just say the characters came to life a little too well! Students learnt about the history of comedy and the origin of slapstick, stock characters and traditional masks.
