From the Deputy Principal – Middle School

Matt PetersenAs we approach the busy end of Term 3, it’s fantastic to see the high-quality and engaging work being produced by our Year 9 and 10 students. Their capacity as independent learners continues to grow, and it’s clear many are taking greater ownership of their learning journey.

It was wonderful to see so many families attend the Parent-Teacher Interviews on Wednesday. These sessions provide a valuable opportunity for open dialogue and feedback on student progress, and we appreciate your ongoing support.

Thank you to all parents and carers who participated in the School Opinion Survey. The survey closes this evening, and we expect to receive the results early in Term 4. Your feedback is vital, and we encourage families to continue sharing thoughts or concerns with our Heads of Department, Deputy Principals, or the school administration. We are committed to working together with our community to continually improve the quality of education and support we provide.

A special thank you to our Year 10 families who took part in the SET planning sessions in Week 4. These meetings are an important step in guiding students toward their senior pathways. Next week, we’ll begin reviewing subject selection clashes as we start building the 2026 timetable. As Term 3 results become available, we’ll also review the academic progress of students who committed to engagement and achievement contracts as part of their eligibility to study General subjects.

Looking ahead, Year 9 subject selections will take place in Week 10. In Year 10 at Yeronga SHS, all students will study English and Mathematics throughout the year. During this time, they will be supported into the most appropriate pathway—General English, EAL English, or Essential English; and for Maths—Mathematical Methods/Specialist, General Maths, or Essential Maths—based on their academic performance.

Students will also study four elective subjects in Semester 1 and another four in Semester 2. As per the Australian Curriculum guidelines, students are required to study at least one Science, one Humanities, and one Health and Physical Education subject across the year.

In 2026, Year 10 students will also have the opportunity to study a Language for either one semester or the full year. This option will also apply to selected Arts subjects. As students move closer to their senior years, our curriculum is designed to support those who wish to explore senior subjects early, as well as those who want to deepen their understanding in subjects they already enjoy and excel in.

We look forward to supporting your children through these important next steps in their education journey.
