Principal's Report

Ben 1.JPG

It’s been a vibrant and rewarding few weeks at Yeronga State High School, with many exciting achievements and celebrations across our school community. I am so proud of our community and all that we are achieving together.

We were pleased to shine a spotlight on the work happening across our Arts programs during the recent Arts Academy Showcase on 1 August. It was a thoughtful and engaging evening that highlighted the creativity and dedication of our students across a range of artistic disciplines. From visual art to dance, drama and music, students shared their skills and passion in ways that reflected both their individual growth and the collaborative nature of the arts. The evening was a valuable reminder of how the arts contribute to building confidence, connection, and community within our school. We extend our thanks to the students and staff whose hard work made the event such a success.

We were also thrilled to see Yeronga SHS represented for the first time at the Ipswich Performers Dance Competition. Congratulations to our Year 9 team on their efforts, and a special thanks to Ms Alex Fliakos for her dedication and support. A special mention goes to Rhea McDonald (Year 9), who placed third in the Year 12 student choreography category—an outstanding result.

Our biennial Yeronga Celebrates event was another highlight, showcasing the wonderful diversity of our school community. It was heartening to see students embrace their cultures and nationalities with pride and courage, contributing to a shared culture of celebration within our school. A huge thank you to staff and students for a wonderful event, and to our community partners and parents for joining us to share in this special celebration.

We’re proud to share that Yeronga SHS has received the Educator Award for Best Co-Curricular Program, a prestigious recognition as the best in Australia. This award includes schools from both the State and Non-State sectors. Additionally, we were honoured to be named a finalist in the Wellbeing category. These accolades highlight the quality and breadth of programs and support we offer beyond the classroom, and the inclusive, supportive environment we continue to build.

Our Year 11 Leadership Camp provided another great learning experience for our students—muddy, cold, wet, and full of fun. Despite the challenging conditions, students rose to the occasion, showing leadership, teamwork, and resilience.
There have been many student successes this term. I want to acknowledge our students of Spanish, Chinese, and Japanese who represented the school in the LTQ Brisbane Speech Contest. They presented with great poise, confidence, and passion—congratulations to all involved.

In sport, we’ve seen strong results at District Athletics, with our highest number of students progressing through to the Met West Carnival. We’re excited to watch their continued success.

Looking ahead, we’re proud of the continued growth of our music program. Over the past four years, we’ve expanded from a small concert band to a dynamic program now featuring a 40-member symphonic band, jazz band, string ensemble, advanced string quartet, and multiple choirs. We look forward to showcasing our talented students at the Instrumental Music Night on 28 October.
