Principal’s Message – Term 3 Reflections
The past few weeks at Yeronga State High School have been full of meaningful learning, growth, and community connection. As Term 3 draws to a close, I want to take a moment to acknowledge the many achievements and efforts across our school.
In sport, congratulations to the seven Yeronga students selected for the Met West team to compete in the State Titles in Townsville next term. This achievement not only reflects their hard work and talent, but also the increasing number of students making representative teams, supported by our dedicated staff in the Athletes Academy. We also had our highest number of students progress from District Athletics to the Met West Carnival - well done to all involved.

Our music program continues to go from strength to strength. Participation numbers have grown significantly, and the quality of performance continues to rise. Our recent Instrumental Music Night was a fantastic showcase of this progress, with students from across our ensembles—symphonic band, jazz band, string ensembles, and choirs—performing with skill, confidence, and enthusiasm. A huge thank you to the students and staff who make this program such a success.

Thank you to all families who attended Parent-Teacher Interviews recently. Your involvement plays a key role in supporting student progress, and we value the strong partnerships we continue to build with our parent community.
We’re also proud of the additional support and opportunities we’ve been able to offer students this year. In 2025, we piloted Flexispace support programs in Years 8 and 9 Maths and English. These targeted, small-group sessions are designed to build confidence and improve outcomes for identified students - and the impact is already being seen. We’ve also introduced a new initiative for passionate readers and writers, with a group of Year 9 students piloting a Literature subject. This exciting program aims to extend students with a strong interest in English, with a view to becoming a senior subject offering in the future. We’re also running Breakfast Club five days a week, ensuring every student has access to a healthy start to the school day.
Our school facilities have also seen significant improvements. Over the holiday break, we will complete upgrades to J Block, install a new long jump pit and track, build new courts on the Top Oval, and renovate the courts outside our administration block. Student voice has been a key part of the redesign process, and some exciting new colour choices are on the way.

As we approach the end of term, we’re looking forward to celebrating some important milestones, including the announcement of our 2026 school leaders and, of course, the Year 12 Formal.
A reminder that every day of learning counts - attendance right through to the end of term makes a difference.

From Deputy Principal Junior School - Term 3 Wrap-Up
Dear Yeronga SHS Community,
As we come to the final week of Term 3, it is a great time to reflect on the energy, spirit, and togetherness that make the Junior School such a vibrant place to learn and grow. Our students have been working hard across all subjects, and it has been wonderful to see their effort and persistence paying off.
On Thursday 11 September, we joined together to acknowledge R U OK? Day – a national reminder of the importance of checking in on one another. Our Junior School students embraced the spirit of the day, gathering for a bright and cheerful celebration that represented all things yellow. A sausage sizzle, delicious cakes, and refreshing juice brought our school community together, while also promoting the simple yet powerful message: asking “Are you OK?” can make a real difference. It was a wonderful way to build connection, kindness, and support across our year levels.

As Deputy Principal of the Junior School, I would also like to take a moment to introduce the dedicated leadership team who work every day to support our students’ learning and wellbeing:
Sheridan Townsley – Deputy Principal (Junior School)
Brock Germain – Head of Department, Junior Secondary
Jordan Plumridge – Year 7 Learning Area Manager
Kate Middleton-Pol – Year 8 Learning Area Manager
Together, we are committed to ensuring that every student in Years 7 and 8 feels supported, challenged, and inspired to achieve their best. Parents and carers are always encouraged to reach out to any member of our team if you have questions, concerns, or simply want to connect about your child’s learning journey.
Looking ahead, our transition processes for incoming students in 2026 are now underway. If you are considering enrolling your child at Yeronga SHS, we encourage you to submit your enrolment application as soon as possible to ensure a smooth transition into the Junior School next year. Early enrolment helps us plan effectively to provide the best support and opportunities for your child.
Families are also reminded that NAPLAN reports for 2025 are now available through OneSchool. These results provide valuable insight into student progress and areas for growth, and we encourage parents to take the time to review them carefully. Should you wish to discuss your child’s report in more detail, please contact their teachers or our Junior School leadership team.
As we finish Term 3, we want to congratulate all students on their achievements so far this year. Term 4 will be an important one, with assessments, celebrations, and preparations for the year ahead. We encourage students to use the upcoming holiday break to recharge, spend time with family and friends, and come back ready for a strong finish to 2025.
On behalf of the Junior School team, I wish all our students and families a safe and restful holiday. Thank you for your continued support – we look forward to welcoming everyone back for an exciting Term 4.
Sheridan Townsley - Deputy Principal – Junior School

From the Deputy Principal – Middle School
As Term 3 comes to a close, I want to recognize the incredible effort from both our teachers and students during what has been a very busy term. One of the highlights was definitely Yeronga Celebrates. However, my recent visits to classrooms have also shown me the excellent teaching and learning happening every day.
A key focus this year has been embedding a whole-school approach to teaching, which is part of our Annual Implementation Plan. It has been inspiring to see a wide variety of effective teaching strategies in action across all classrooms. Even more impressive is the high level of student engagement and their understanding of how to improve when asked—this reflects the hard work and dedication of our teachers.
Year 10 SET Plan Reviews – Reviewing Subject Contracts
Next week, as Term 3 report data becomes available, Ms Haswell-Smith and I will begin conducting SET Plan reviews with Year 10 students who signed subject contracts during the SET plan interviews. These contracts involve a commitment to improve their effort in certain subjects. The reviews will take place during Weeks 1 to 3 of next Term.
At the Year 10 assembly next week, I will encourage all students to carefully review their Term 3 results and revisit their SET plans, especially the Pathway Portfolio section. This part helps students explore the requirements for entering their chosen future pathways or careers.
Good luck to our Gala Day teams competing next week! Many thanks to the staff who have worked hard preparing the teams.
I wish all students and families a safe and relaxing Spring Vacation. We look forward to welcoming everyone back to school on Tuesday, 7 October.

2026 School Captains
This year, we've had an overwhelming number of outstanding Year 11 applicants who put their hands up for a 2026 school leadership position. It takes courage and commitment to nominate, and I applaud every student who stepped forward.
Our 2026 School Captains will be officially announced in Week 10, with the symbolic jacket handover from our 2025 Captains to the incoming team.
To all the other inspiring candidates: remember, leadership is not defined by a badge alone. Each of you has shown initiative and determination, and I know you will continue to influence and support our school community in meaningful ways as you make 2026 your year.
Year 11
At this week’s Year Level Assembly, students were reminded about the importance of attendance and uniform expectations.
- Attendance: Students are expected to maintain at least 95% attendance. Missing school can have significant academic and social impacts. Research shows absenteeism is linked to increased social isolation, lower engagement, and potential emotional or behavioural challenges. If students are absent, parents/carers must notify the school and provide a valid reason. In senior school, absences that affect assessment require a medical certificate.
- Uniform:
- Formal uniform – Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays.
- Sports uniform – Wednesdays and Fridays.
- Students with Physical Education or Sports & Recreation on formal days must bring their sports uniform and change in and out before and after class.
- Students needing to borrow uniform items must see Student Services before school or request a pass from their LAM, HOD Senior School, or myself.
- A reminder that facial piercings are limited to a small nose stud. Nose rings, septum piercings, lip/eyebrow rings, or dangling earrings are not permitted for workplace health and safety reasons.
Year 12
As we move into Term 4, Year 12 students have just three weeks of scheduled classes before external exams begin. It is crucial students attend every day, finalise their assessment tasks, and ensure they meet requirements to secure their QCE credits.
External Assessment Resources
To support Year 12 students undertaking General subject exams, the QCAA has updated its online resources here. These include:
- Guides to help students understand and prepare for external assessments
- Key dates and schedules
- Approved equipment lists for all assessments
- Student directions and requirements
Students can access these resources directly on the QCAA website.
Year 12 Student Portal
The Student Portal gives students access to personal learning information, subject results, and their learning account. All Year 12 students should now have registered. Those who do not know their LUI number should contact the Senior School office for support.
Registering to Receive Your ATAR
All ATAR-eligible students must register with QTAC to receive their ATAR result. This process is separate from applying for tertiary courses. Registration requires a LUI number and includes email confirmation from QTAC with a code to finalise sign-up. Students can visit the QTAC Website and click on ATAR and then ATAR Portal and sign up. Students are encouraged to see their allocated QTAC Support Person for assistance or complete the process online via the QTAC ATAR Portal.
Final Note
I wish all our senior students a well-earned break. Take the time to rest, recharge, and return in Term 4 ready to finish the year with energy, focus, and confidence.

Learner Agency Program 2026 and Beyond!
The Junior, Middle, and Senior Heads of Department are currently undertaking a comprehensive review of our Learner Agency Program in preparation for 2026. This process is guided by a renewed commitment to fostering student voice, choice, and ownership in learning, with a clear and intentional focus on three key pillars: Respectful Relationships, Career Education, and Wellbeing. By aligning these priorities, we aim to strengthen the program’s impact and ensure it continues to support students in becoming confident, capable, and connected learners, ready to thrive both within and beyond the school environment.
Term 3 Report Cards
Report cards will be released next week, marking the culmination of Term 3 and providing a valuable snapshot of each student’s progress. These reports reflect our ongoing focus on student achievement, effort, and behaviour, recognising both academic outcomes and the personal qualities that contribute to a positive learning environment. We encourage families to take time to review the reports together, celebrate successes, and discuss areas for growth as we continue to support every learner in reaching their full potential.
Inquire Updates
As part of the Year 7 and 8 Inquire curriculum, students have been actively engaged in Social Action Projects designed to foster Active Citizenship and a strong sense of social responsibility. These projects empower students to identify real-world issues, collaborate on meaningful solutions, and take purposeful action within their communities. By giving back in thoughtful and practical ways, students are developing empathy, leadership, and a deeper understanding of their role in shaping a more inclusive and compassionate society.
Get Involved
At our school, getting involved is a key part of student life, with dozens of opportunities available to suit a wide range of interests. From lunchtime clubs and sporting teams to our popular Junior Gala Days, students are encouraged to connect, collaborate, and contribute beyond the classroom. These activities not only build skills and friendships but also foster a strong sense of belonging and school spirit, helping every student feel engaged and empowered in their learning journey. We even have popular Staff vs Students events, and in 2026 we are relaunching the House Cup!

News From Middle School: Student Voice and Attendance
Term 3 is in full swing, and our Year 9 and 10 students are showing us every day that leadership and learning don’t just happen in the classroom — they happen in how we show up, speak up, and back each other.
Student Voice in Action
Student voice is alive and well. Whether it’s analysing the Belonging & Connection survey data, planning this term’s Yeronga Student identity activity, or shaping our code of conduct, students aren’t just being asked for feedback — they’re leading.
They’re setting the direction for our Horizons Women’s Hub too, and showing us that when we make space, they’ll fill it with purpose, creativity, and care. This isn’t just participation — it’s leadership.
Together for Humanity - Youth Summit
On Thursday 28th August, a group of Yeronga studdents took part in the Together For Humanity Youth Summit at the QLD Parliament House Brisbane. The Summit, created by Together For Humanity and supported by the Federal Department of Education, was a platform for students to voice their ideas around intercultural diversity, inclusion and community cohesion to fellow participants, politicians, and leaders. The students prepared a presentation around the theme, 'Bridging to the future: Navigating identity and Differences Together', selecting the topic of Student Voice.
There were 14 schools in attendance from Queensland & Northern Territory, with a diverse range of topics that showed what was close to the hearts of the students and their communities. Seeing the students confidently present and share their ideas on complex social issues was really inspiring!
Students were welcomed to Yuggera country by Derek Oram-Sandy, and also heard from John-Paul Langbroek, QLD Minister for Education and the Arts, and Jason Clare MP, Federal Minister for Education.
They displayed teamwork, leadership and dedication during the preparation of the presentation prior to the Summit day. We hope the Summit is a catalyst for action out in the world.

Alna George's Experience at the Together for Harmony Youth Summit
"Some others and I were lucky enough to attend the 2025 Youth Summit – Together for Humanity, an event where select schools from QLD and the NT were invited to the Queensland Parliament House to share our responses to the topic “Bridging to the future: Navigating identity and differences together”. Our school spoke about this theme through the lens of student voice, and how our school encourages people to share their experiences through various summits, SRC meetings, and Yeronga Celebrates. We then heard from other schools their ways of addressing diversity, and discussed with them and parliament members our ideas.
A personal highlight of this event was meeting so many students who shared similar backgrounds and experiences to me and discussing how to educate and encourage students to participate in school events. I can’t express how proud we were to represent the school at parliament."
Pride in the Everyday
Lately we’ve been talking about the quiet ways we show leadership — things like wearing the full uniform, greeting others by name, or inviting someone in.
These might seem small, but they go a long way in helping others feel safe and seen. So our focus right now is simple: Show pride. Help others belong.
Leaders wear their full uniform with pride — especially on stage, at events, and in the classroom. It’s not about perfection; it’s about consistency and connection.
Engagement Means Showing Up
Attendance is still a big focus for both Year Levels. We’re continuing to push the message:
"Every student matters – your presence helps others feel connected too."
Our attendance prize wheel on assembly is celebrating the journey, but this is about more than numbers — it’s about trust, routine, and showing students they matter. If someone’s slipping, we take a one step at a time approach, with Learner Agency Mentors and GOs ready to walk beside them.
Women’s Hub: Leading with Purpose
The buzz is building for our next Horizons Women’s Hub breakfast featuring Anisa Nandaula as keynote speaker. We are getting excited to share the full details with you including working with Mu’ooz for catering.
Some recent student comments:
“When I wear the full uniform, it shows I belong here.”
“Coming to school helps my friends feel more confident too.”
“Being part of Women’s Hub made me realise I have something to say.”
Let’s keep showing up — for ourselves, and for each other.

Women in Sport Summit at QUT
On Tuesday 26 August 2025, we had the incredible opportunity to attend the Women in Sport Summit at Queensland University of Technology (QUT) — an experience we’ll never forget! The event brought together athletes, coaches, industry professionals, and students to celebrate women’s achievements in sport and explore how we can continue driving equality and inclusion within the sporting world.
The day was filled with inspiring guest speakers who shared their personal journeys and the challenges they’ve faced as women in sport. We heard from elite athletes, sports journalists, and industry leaders who spoke about breaking barriers, chasing opportunities, and creating pathways for the next generation of female athletes.
One of the most powerful messages of the day was the importance of representation — seeing women compete, coach, and lead at the highest levels. It reminded us how vital strong female role models are in inspiring young people, especially girls, to dream big and believe in their potential.
We also took part in interactive sessions where we learned about leadership, resilience, and advocacy. These workshops encouraged us to think about the role we can play in creating positive change within our own schools, teams, and communities. While the summit highlighted the incredible progress made in women’s sport, it also reminded us that there’s still work to do to achieve true equality.
Attending the summit left us feeling empowered, motivated, and inspired. We came away with a deeper understanding of the barriers that still exist and a stronger sense of responsibility in helping shape the future of women’s sport.
Year 11 student Elsie Pekin reflected on her experience, saying she loved exploring the many pathways women can take in sport and gaining insights into the different industries involved. She especially enjoyed testing out QUT’s Sports Metrics equipment and learning how data is collected and used to improve athletic performance.
A huge thank you to QUT for hosting such an incredible event and giving us the chance to be part of this important conversation.

Cross Country success!
Year 8 students, Tom Gribble and Alfie Jonsson recently competed at the Australian Athletics Cross Country Championships in Ballarat. Both boys braved the muddy course and came away with great results. Tom came 4th in his age group and received a silver medal for the Queensland Under 14 boys team, whilst Alfie came 23rd out of 70 runners and was 5th out of 15 Queenslanders in the Under 15s. As a 14 year old, Alfie also competed in a relay in Under 16s (2 boys and 2 girls) and they came 9th out of 26 teams.

Last weekend Tom also competed at the SSA Cross Country Championships at the Gold Coast. Tom represented Queensland and scored a silver medal for his individual event as well as silver for his team event.
Junior Spring Gala Day
Next week, our junior students will be representing Yeronga SHS at the last Junior Gala Day for the year. Due to the increasing popularity of Pickleball, for the first time, Yeronga SHS will be hosting the sport on the Multipurpose Courts.
Other students will be representing Yeronga in Badminton, AFL and Ultimate Disc. Next term there will be new sports to choose for period 4 on Wednesdays.

Year 12
Students in year 12 have finalised their third pieces of assessment in each subject and now the General Subject students have been sitting mock exams, ready to revise for block exams in Term 4. The Applied Subject students have also been finalising assessment pieces and have almost completed their courses of study. Congratulations to the Certificate III in Entrepreneurship and New Business students and Diploma of Business students who have already completed their course. This is a wonderful achievement and will help students successfully enrol in courses for 2026. In Week 10, there will be an opportunity for Diploma students to work intensively with their trainer to complete the course as well.
Year 11
Tourism students headed to Noosa to stay at Ecohabitat as part of their Tourism studies. From the data they have collected, they will prepare a guide to ecotourism in the area. Big thanks to Miss Lennon, Mr Grath, and Mr Lawson for organising and attending the camp. I am sure the students enjoyed their experiences in the Noosa National Park, Hastings Street, and the Ecocamp itself.

Coming up: Students who have applied to study the Diploma of Business in 2026 have been notified of LLND testing which will be conducted in Week 10. If you are unable to attend, please contact Mrs Fortescue to arrange an alternative time. Once students have met the pre-requisites and passed the LLND successfully, a formal offer of enrolment into the course can be made. Deposits will be due before the end of this year, and the online course enrolment should hopefully be completed as well, ready to begin the 2026 school year in the course. Please do not hesitate to contact me should you have any questions regarding the Diploma of Business.

My Homestay Experience: Wendy Vo, Year 11 Student From Vietnam
Introduce Myself
Hello! My name is Wendy Vo, and I'm from Vietnam. I began studying at Yeronga State High School on 4th October 2023 as a Year 9 student. My favourite subjects are Mathematics and Accounting. I hope to attend university to study Business in the future.
What I Enjoy Most About Homestay Life
I’m staying with a host family who are distant relatives, and they have made me feel very welcome. Their three children, aged 10, 7, and 4, are adorable! We spend lots of time playing video games and having fun together. I really enjoy these moments, it feels like I’m part of their family.
A Memorable Moment
One of my most special memories so far was when my host family organized a birthday party for me. They prepared a beautiful cake and gave me a thoughtful gift. It was a wonderful day spent with them, and I felt very grateful to be part of such a caring family.
Living in a homestay has been an amazing and enjoyable experience. It’s given me the chance to learn about Australian family lifestyle and feel at home far from home.
School Experience
I went to Noosa, Sunshine Coast, for a school excursion. I really enjoyed spending time with my school friends. At our camping site, I saw lots of kangaroos, which was an amazing experience for me. It was wonderful to be away from home and enjoy something new and exciting.

Ranyu Masuda (Japan) – Years 11 & 12 (2019–2021)
We were delighted to welcome back one of our international alumni, Ranyu Masuda, who studied with us at Yeronga during Years 11 and 12. Ranyu graduated in 2021 and has since gone on to pursue her passion for Natural Medicine.
After returning home to Japan, Ranyu took her studies abroad once again, this time to Denmark, where she spent two years completing further qualifications in the field. Her interest in natural medicine began from a very personal place — a desire to better understand health and wellbeing while managing her own health concerns.
Ranyu is now back in Australia for the next two years to continue her studies, with the goal of building a career that allows her to help others through holistic approaches to health. During her recent visit to Yeronga, she was thrilled to reconnect with her teachers and her former homestay mother, Enija Neskovic, who remains an important part of her Australian journey.
She shared with us that she holds fond memories of her time at Yeronga, including the friendships she formed, the support she received from her teachers, and the cultural experiences that shaped her. Ranyu expressed her gratitude for the opportunities she had while studying here and is excited about the future that lies ahead.
We are proud of Ranyu’s achievements and look forward to following her journey as she continues to combine her international experiences with her dedication to natural health.

Artists in English - Y-Connect
This term in Year 11 EAL, students have been preparing for the creation of a Dramatic Monologue in response to the play, Murras. Students were fortunate to have the expertise of Ngoc Phan, a multi award-winning actor, director, and playwright, working with them to enrich ideas, voice and tone of their monologues. Ngoc initially worked with each class separately and then collectively to create short monologues with activities that deepened their knowledge of characterisation embedding mood, tone and emotive language. As a result, students were effectively able to convey values, attitudes and beliefs within the context of the play and bring characters to life. It was heartwarming to watch student confidence grow as they collaborated, ultimately developing and delivering short spoken monologues to practise the techniques Ngoc shared in the workshop.
Ms Lundin and Ms Gibbons are looking forward to watching the final creations! Below are some images from the collaborative workshop.
