From Deputy Principal - Middle School

Matt_2.JPG

I would like to extend a warm welcome to parents and carers and look forward to meeting or reconnecting with you all across the course of the year.  The partnership between school and home is most important and I welcome open and regular communication with parents and carers of all students.  Please contact me on the details below if you have any enquiries.

I'm excited to work with the Middle School Team to support the engagement and learning outcomes of all students in Year 9 and 10.  HOD of Middle School – Ms Holly Haswell Smith (hhasw1@eq.edu.au),  Year 10 Learner Agency Mentor – Mr Darrin Wood (dwood10@eq.edu.au) and Year 9 Learner Agency Mentor - Mr David Fan (dfan0@eq.edu.au). Please don't hesitate to email Holly, Darrin or David any questions or concerns you may have.

Communications – Right to disconnect

At Yeronga State High School, we value open communication between home and school. We kindly ask that professional courtesy is observed in all email exchanges. We understand that everyone has busy lives, and both school and home administrative tasks require significant time and attention. To ensure a thoughtful response, please allow staff up to one full business day to review and reply to emails. For urgent matters, we encourage you to contact the school administration to arrange a meeting or phone call for quicker assistance. Similarly, if students are seeking feedback or support from teachers via email, we ask for your patience in allowing time for a response.

For Year 9 Students we have an exciting start to the year with Camp coming up fast in Week 6.  Numbers are strictly limited and places will be offered based on when permission forms and payment is made.  Mr Fan, our Year 9 Learner Agency Mentor has been communicating with  Parents and Carers informed about procedures with at last count, 16 place left for this amazing experience.  I look forwards to spending some time with the students at Maroon Outdoor Education Centre from Tuesday to Friday in Week 6.  Please email me or David if you have any questions regarding camp.

For Year 10 Students a key focus of our Learner Agency Program will be working on preparing for Senior Education and Training Plans for Years 11, 12 and beyond secondary school.  Whilst students will work on this during Learner Agency classes each morning and Ethics and Choices classes on Tuesdays during Period 3, it is important to keep conversations active about the types of courses and jobs that may interest your child so that they have a good understanding of what subjects they need to study in Year 11 and 12 in 2026/27.

One big change to the 2025 timetable is that many Year 10 students will have a blank on their timetable on Wednesday Period 4. This time may be used if students are required to complete courses to support their academic goals if they are not maintaining their work in all subjects. Students with blank Period 4 on Wednesday on their timetable will be able to leave school at 1:05 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon.

Looking forward to an exciting and successful 2025.
